Alumni Spotlight: Martins Igbanu

March 6, 2018

Martins Igbanu had a great game Sunday night against Temple! The Golden Hurricanes won by 18 points, and Igbanu had a total of 23 minutes on the court. He got things rolling with the game's first four points and stopped the drought when the Owls opened the second half on a 9-1 run. He finished the game with 16 points. Guess where he came from!? Covenant Christian Ministries Academy!

Martins Igbanu, a sophomore at the University of Tulsa,  is majoring in business management and is still making his mark on the Hurricane court.  Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Igbanu played all four years of high school at Covenant being trained, groomed, and coached by Frederick T. Anderson, Sr.  While in high school he averaged 19.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks per game, and shot 52-percent from the field as a senior, leading his team to a 28-5 record … averaged 14.1 ppg as a junior and 10.9 ppg as a sophomore.

According to tulsahurricane.com, Igbanu is a returning letterwinner who appeared in all 32 games and averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2016-17. During his freshman year at Tulsa he had 17 starts and averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while he shot 55.9-percent from the field in his rookie campaign … also hit five of his nine attempts from behind the arc (.556) … earned a spot in the starting lineup for the final 13 games of the season and averaged 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds during that stretch … averaged 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game and shot 55.6-percent during conference action … led the team in scoring and rebounding twice each … named The American Rookie of the Week (Feb. 27) after he averaged 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins over USF (Feb. 23) and East Carolina (Feb. 26) … picked up the first double-double of his career with season highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds at Tulane (March 5) … scored in double-figures eight times, including seven times in the final nine games of the season … neared a double-double in his debut with 10 points and nine rebounds against Jacksonville State (Nov. 11).

Keep up the good work, Martins!
